Music and Me

  Background Info:

Hello! I’m Peyton MacMillan and I run cross country and track here at Converse. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but I’m from Fort Mill, South Carolina. I played soccer for about 5 years and basketball for 8, prior to getting into running during my junior year of high school. I have a sister and 2 stepbrothers, and 4 dogs (3 dogs at my mom’s house & 1 at my dad’s). In the summer, I work at a daycare in an elementary school, and I really enjoy it. I work with kids in different age groups varying from kindergarteners through 5th graders. I love walking into the school for my shift and having them be excited to see me. This will be my 3rd year with the company. I’m double majoring in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. I plan to work on a master's degree online, during my first year of teaching. This would mostly be so I can get paid a little more… Once I have a decent amount of experience under my belt, I’d consider getting certified to teach Early Childhood Education classes to high schoolers. I want to get certified in a wide range of grade levels, so I don’t have to stay within the same few grade levels. Middle school is out of the running for me. They’re going through a crisis. As for music, I don’t really have a musical background, but I love listening to it.

  1. Music that I like:

  • I’ve recently been into songs by SZA and Frank Ocean that have a calm vibe. I have always loved songs by strong vocalists such as Adele and Rihanna. I love listening to their music in the car, on my way to work, or longer drives back home from school. Most songs I add to my main playlist are pop throwbacks from around 2010-13 (Some others are Bruno Mars, Lorde, Christina Aguilera, Sia, etc). Songs that are nostalgic to me tend to make the playlist.

  1. Meaningful music:

  • Many songs that are meaningful to me don’t really have anything to do with the lyrics, but more of the time period and experiences. When I was a little kid, my mom was obsessed with Sara Bareilles and would play the song “King of Anything” on repeat. Another one that reminds me of good times from elementary school is "Viva La Vida," by Coldplay. It makes me think of my old house and how my mom played it a lot, during the time I learned to ride a bike. I don’t necessarily have a connection with the lyrics; however, those songs specifically are very nostalgic. When we would go on road trips to see my grandparents who live in Florida, songs by Paramore would play frequently. “Misery Business” was the song I heard the most, so whenever I hear it, I remember those road trips with my mom and sister.

  1. Music I don’t like:

  • I know many people either love or hate this genre, but I don’t love country music. I don’t think all of it is bad, but I’m not a fan of many songs in that genre. Don’t cancel me, but Lainey Wilson, Tim McGraw, and Morgan Wallen specifically, will not be making the playlist. Those come to mind only because my sister plays their music all the time. They aren’t bad singers, I just don’t enjoy listening to their songs. “4x4xU,” and “Humble and Kind” are songs that my sister plays a lot, so maybe I’m just tired of them.

  1. My favorite song was definitely “Pink + White” as I also LOVE Frank Ocean, SZA, Adele, etc. I love the part where it says “My God, giving me pleasure” and love how much meaning his voice alone brings to his lyrics. The one I found most interesting was “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay. I found this interesting because we also used to listen to this when I was growing up! It’s definitely very nostalgic to hear that song!

  2. Hi Peyton! I really enjoyed reading about what music you like because I like a lot of those same artists too. I also agree the the pop throwbacks of the 2010's are some of the best and they also end up on a lot of my playlists too. The song "King of Anything" by Sara Bareilles that you talked about in your meaningful music section also stuck out to me because I love that song! It's so fun and very nostalgic.

  3. Hey Pey Pey! Loved reading ur blog. It's always cool to see how people get into running, it's funny how you found out your sport later on. Also, working at a daycare sounds like such a chaotic job but I truly believe it'll help u in the future. I bet those kids love u! SZA and Frank Ocean are absolute classics. Viva la Vida as a childhood memory is so relatable; it's crazy how certain songs just transport us back in time. And I totally respect the country music stance, everyone has their own style; sometimes it's just not the vibe.
