Music and Us: Our New Playlist

As we have learned in this class, music can be viewed as a reflection upon many things. These regions in specific, are deeply rooted within their culture. I chose to research Spain and the Netherlands because some of my close friends at this school are from there. I chose Mexico because I know the music there is very vibrant and I wanted to look into the more traditional side of it. K-Pop is growing popularity, in not only South Korea, but The U.S. as well, so I wanted to look into it. I was able to learn about more artists in that genre that I didn't know before.  Spain – Traditional: Flamenco Continent: Europe While researching traditional Spanish music, I came across Flamenco. One of its oldest forms is known as the SoleĆ”. It's a combination of song, dance, and instruments, mainly the guitar. This form of art is extremely passionate and expressive. It originated in a southern region of Spain called Andalusia. Between the 9th and 14th centuries, there were periods of migrat...

Music and Family

For this assignment, I decided to interview my mom because she probably cares about music the most in my family, so I figured she' d have the most insight.  Me: Where did you get introduced to music and how? Mom : I’d say just my environment, mainly from my parents. My mom loved cooking and had the radio playing every time she was making dinner, or just in the kitchen. We didn’t really listen to country that much, but we did listen to the oldies station. My dad isn’t much of a music guy, and still doesn’t play music in the car like a psychopath. So whatever my mom listened to, I listened to.  Me: What are some of your earliest/favorite memories of music? Mom : Um, probably just whatever was playing while my brother and I were hanging out, growing up. We don’t talk so much anymore, but we were really close growing up, and both loved music, so it was always on in the background.  Me: Is there any particular artist that had a significant impact on you as a child? Why?...

On September 20th, 2014, I was able to witness a beautiful moment with family and friends. On that day, my mom married my stepdad. I was in the third grade at the time, and 8 years old. It wasn’t just a wedding, but a blending of families. I went from a household consisting of my mom and sister, to an addition of my stepdad and two stepbrothers. I chose this event with one reason being it was the first wedding I’d ever been to, as well as being the most fun. I remember the songs from it more than any other wedding I’ve been to because I was in it, and was a flower girl with my sister. One memorable moment— my mom walking down the aisle— occurred when the song “It takes two,” by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock played. They wanted everyone to feel the energetic and upbeat vibe for their day full of positivity. This song encapsulates their love and commitment to each other.  “Ice Ice Baby,” by Vanilla Ice , was another song that brought the energy and uplifted everyone’s spirit. It ad...

Background Info: Hello! I’m Peyton MacMillan and I run cross country and track here at Converse. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but I’m from Fort Mill, South Carolina. I played soccer for about 5 years and basketball for 8, prior to getting into running during my junior year of high school. I have a sister and 2 stepbrothers, and 4 dogs (3 dogs at my mom’s house & 1 at my dad’s). In the summer, I work at a daycare in an elementary school, and I really enjoy it. I work with kids in different age groups varying from kindergarteners through 5th graders. I love walking into the school for my shift and having them be excited to see me. This will be my 3rd year with the company. I’m double majoring in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. I plan to work on a master's degree online, during my first year of teaching. This would mostly be so I can get paid a little more… Once I have a decent amount of experience under my belt, I’d consider getting certified to teac...
