Music and Family

For this assignment, I decided to interview my mom because she probably cares about music the most in my family, so I figured she'd have the most insight.

Me: Where did you get introduced to music and how?

Mom: I’d say just my environment, mainly from my parents. My mom loved cooking and had the radio playing every time she was making dinner, or just in the kitchen. We didn’t really listen to country that much, but we did listen to the oldies station. My dad isn’t much of a music guy, and still doesn’t play music in the car like a psychopath. So whatever my mom listened to, I listened to.

Me: What are some of your earliest/favorite memories of music?

Mom: Um, probably just whatever was playing while my brother and I were hanging out, growing up. We don’t talk so much anymore, but we were really close growing up, and both loved music, so it was always on in the background.

Me: Is there any particular artist that had a significant impact on you as a child? Why?

Mom: Oh, that’s a good one. I don’t know if I have a favorite, but I do know Madonna was a big one back then. She was always bold and said whatever she had on her mind, which I admired.

Me: What influenced your music taste growing up?

Mom: Well, like I mentioned earlier, whatever my mom was playing in the kitchen probably had the biggest influence. When I got older, I really enjoyed watching the newest music videos, for more than just the song, but I thought their outfits and fashion sense were interesting too.

Me: What did you hear around the house as a kid?

Mom: Sometimes my mom would play older stuff from like the 60’s, sometimes 70’s. I was a child in the early 80’s and I heard a lot of music from Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston at the time.

Me: What was your preference in music and how did it shape your life at the time?

Mom: I mean, I was probably 80’s fashion’s biggest hater, but I did like 80’s pop music. Back then, It was probably my favorite. I was always just amazed by Whitney’s voice and I loved that song that was super popular (I Wanna Dance With Somebody). I was a really big Journey fan so of course I was really into “Don’t Stop Believin’.” I don’t know how much it shaped my life but it just made me happy— that upbeat stuff.

Me: How did your music taste change when you were transitioning from college to adult?

Mom: Well I was in college in the late 90’s and Britney Spears and Celine Dion were artists I listened to a good bit. As I got older, I liked more acoustic music. Like you know, I always listen to the coffee house station now. The Dave Matthews Band is probably who I listen to the most right now.

Her special mentions:

"Billie Jean" - Michael Jackson

"Don't stop Believin" - Journey

"My Heart Will Go On" - Celine Dion

"Satellite" - Dave Matthews Band (She listens to this way too much)

  1. Hi, Your mom seems to have a pretty diverse music taste. I love all the songs specifically the Michael Jackson song I used to listen to him a lot in late middle school and early high school, and my mom used to listen to Dave Matthews Band a lot so that made me think of her.

  2. Hello Peyton, your interview was very creative, and it really captures how music is so important in our lives. It’s really amazing how your mothers tastes have changed over time from dancing to Madonna and Whitney to listening to Dave Matthews Band.
